Outline1 Biography2 Key Ideas in painting3 Famous paintings made by Vittore Carpaccio Biography The biography of Vittore Carpaccio is very interesting. For the Venetian, Carpaccio served the reality as an inexhaustible source of creative inspiration. After training with Gentile Bellini, the artist came out on his own at the moment when Venice was promoted to the number of leading art schools in Italy. And even then its main features were defined: the poetic vision of the world, admiration for its beauty and diversity, the colorful richness of its picturesque transformation. Vittore Carpaccio was not only a talented painter but also a very educated man for his time. He painted pictures on biblical subjects and myths and sometimes left them inscriptions in the ancient Aramaic language. Vittore Carpaccio is a born narrator, passionately narrating about the beauty of his native Venice, about the life of her citizens. A vivid example of this is one of the earliest works of the artist the cycle, created paintings in the 1490s The Life of St. Ursula (Venice, Academy). The medieval legend appears before the viewer in large monumental canvases as a beautiful spectacle, fascinating with various details. Vittore Carpaccio moves the action to the modern situation of Venice, and it is the living city with its embankments, canals, and gondolas that becomes the background on which nine scenes of the legend unfold. The most poetic artwork of them is St. Ursula. Â » In the spacious room of the Venetian Palace, an angel comes in quietly, carrying the message of a young girl sleeping on the bed. On the windows, there are flowers in large beautiful vases, in the corner, there is a table with books. All these details correspond to the state of peace and sincere feeling that reigns in the picture. Key Ideas in painting Vittore Carpaccio was a contemporary painter of the great Venetian artists of the High Renaissance, but he himself continued to create drawings in the 16th century, imbued with a spirit of the fairy-tale and naive narrative. In the first decade of the 16th century in his biography, he performed three series of drawings, of which famous paintings for Scuola San Giorgio degli Schiavoni in Venice are particularly well known. They reproduce scenes from the life of the saints Jerome and George. In The Battle of St. George the saint is represented by a beautiful blond knight, fearlessly hitting the spear of a fairy dragon. The hero is greeted in the city square by a bright oriental crowd in colorful costumes in the scene of The Triumph of St. George . The elders in turbans and expensive embroidered dressing gowns, various womens costumes, their fancy headdresses all this was seen by the artist on the streets of Venice, which led a lively trade with the countries of the East. .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969 , .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969 .postImageUrl , .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969 , .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969:hover , .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969:visited , .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969:active { border:0!important; } .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969:active , .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969 .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0dfde8f803407233a467adde18b58969:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Hieronymus BoschFamous paintings made by Vittore Carpaccio The wonderful gift of the Vittore Carpaccio-narrator brightly revealed itself in the scenes from the life of St. Hieronymus. In a quiet monastery courtyard, where recently monks used to walk peacefully, Jerome appeared, leading on a leash to the lion loyal to him. This causes a general panic, and the monks fled in fear. The artist enthusiastically unfolds this event in front of the spectator in his work, not forgetting about a lot of expressive details. But as an artist of the Renaissance epoch Vittore Carpaccio in the composition St. Jerome in the cell follows the humanistic ideals of his time. The room in which the saint is depicted resembles not the cell, but rather the study of the scientist. Lying all over the place, on shelves and in lockers, books speak of the concentrated solitary life of Jerome. The objects are depicted in the artwork not only accurately characterize the situation, but also warmed by the inner human heat. However, the painter is not limited to a simple descr iption. Falling from the high window to the right, the light transforms the interior, filling it with a sublime spiritualized feeling. This ability of poetizing reality is evidence of the great creative talent of the painter. Carpaccio was, in fact, one of the first genre painters of Western European famous paintings, and within the limits of the Venetian school, he opened the way to a whole galaxy of masters who sang in their work the unique poetic beauty of their native Venice. Carpaccio created a series of nine paintings, over which he worked for eight years. On each work, canvas draws attention carefully to the details. And although the series tells us a story from the Christian past, it is possible to study the interiors, decor and everyday life of a modern Italian artist in detail. Striking for those times the scale of the paintings, the abundance of characters and religious pathos captured the minds of convinced Venetian Catholics, which made the name of a rapidly growing artist. Vittore Carpaccio created a number of large-scale paintings dedicated to Christian saints. He also has portraits, among which the Young Knight was particularly fond of the public. The work is unusual in that it was the first full-length portrait in the history of European painting. Carpaccio also turned out to be the author of the portrait, whose characters were mistakenly mistaken. In the XIX century, the famous English art theorist John Ruskin drew attention to the artwork of Carpaccio Two Venetians. Due to overly frank toilets, Ruskin considered that the artwork shows prosperous Venetian courtesans.

Just as Homer used the first lines of the Iliad and Odyssey to announce the main themes of those poems, Virgil presents the two main themes of the Aeneid in the first line. What are these two central themes? In The Aeneid, Virgil’s first two lines â€Å"I sing of warfare and a man at war. / He came to Italy by destiny. † Like with Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey, Virgil’s central theme for The Aeneid is war, though in a vastly different light than that of Homer’s two epics. With Aeneid, the central character Aeneas fleas Troy during a darkened time for his native city, when it is being ravaged in a war between the Greeks and Achilles. The line He came to Italy by destiny tells me that The Aeneid’s focus is central to fate and destiny and how so many people during this time put a lot of their energy believing in, and raging wars in the name of both. What universal force is responsible for Aeneas’s sufferings as an exile (see line 3)? In accordance with this universal force, what is the purpose of his sufferings? Land and sea are what are responsibile for Aeneas sufferings as an exile while he made the journey from Troy to Italy. Explain the reasons for Juno’s hatred of the Trojans. Juno’s hatred towards the other Trojan’s was because the arrival of another Trojan, Paris, voted in a beauty contest against Juno, a contest that she ended up losing. Compare and contrast Homer’s description of the shield of Achilles in the Iliad (XVIII. 572ff. ) with Virgil’s description of the shield of Aeneas in the Aeneid (VIII. 24ff. ). Both Aeneas and Achilles are given shields that help to defend against their enemies. With Aeneas, he is given a shield to help protect Rome from an invasion, whereas Achilles is given a shield to face off and carry out his revenge against Hector. Both similar in their uses are vastly different in design. For Achilles, his holds engravings of common life during his time.

Perfect Pizzeria Essay Essays

Perfect Pizzeria Essay Essays Perfect Pizzeria Essay Essay Perfect Pizzeria Essay Essay Perfect Pizzeria Restaurants is a concatenation of 125 pizza constitutions around the state with central offices in Madison. Wisconsin. There are three locations in Bloomington. Indiana nevertheless they have fiscal and employee jobs peculiarly at the location near the Indiana University campus. Each location has one director and two displacement leaders. The employees are largely college pupils. with a few high school pupils executing the less ambitious occupations. About all of the employees. with the exclusion of some directors. are employed parttime and most earned merely the minimal pay or somewhat above. To turn to the fiscal jobs. the Perfect Pizzeria manager’s compensation program was changed to now being based on nutrient and drink costs and net income marks. If the per centum of nutrient unsold or damaged is really low. the director gets a fillip. If the per centum is high. the director does non have a fillip ; instead he or she receives merely his or her normal wage. Their compensation is besides reflected in the restaurant’s net income figures which besides must make a certain degree for the director to have a fillip. Thus the directors knew the standards being used for their rating and hence where to concentrate their attempts. These net income and loss figures frequently fluctuate. Knowing the director can non be in the shop 24 hours a twenty-four hours. some employees make up for their low payroll checks by assisting themselves to the nutrient. When a friend comes in to order a pizza. excess ingredients are put on the friend’s pizza. An occasional piece or two of pizza by the 18 to 20 employees throughout the day/evening at the interruption tabular array besides raises the per centum figure. An occasional pail of sauce may be spilled or a pizza by chance burned. Sometimes the incorrect size of pizza may be made. In the event of an employee error or a burned pizza by the oven individual. thedisbursal is supposed to come from the single employee. Because of equal force per unit area. the dark director seldom writes up a measure for the mistaking employee. Alternatively the constitution takes the loss and the mistake goes unnoticed until the terminal of the month when the stock list is taken. That’s when the director finds out if the nutrient loss per centum is high and if there will be a fillip. ( Following page ) Over clip these loss figures increased. To turn to these jobs at the Bloomington location. the director took retaliatory steps. Previously. each employee was entitled to a free pizza piece. salad. and all the soft drinks he or she could imbibe for every 4 hours of work. Management decided to raise this figure to 6 hours of work before any free nutrient. Since the employees had received this â€Å"free nutrient after 4-hours† benefit for a long clip they often ignored the regulation and took advantage of the state of affairs whenever the director was non in the edifice. Therefore. the Perfect Pizzeria director decided to make an helper director place which could more closely oversee the displacement leaders. Each displacement leader was now responsible for a squad of 3 – 4 employees who were given specific duties for a peculiar occupation such as counter. bringing. nutrient readying. etc. Employee apathy grew within the pizza shop. There seemed to be a farther separation between the shop director and his workers. who were one time a closely knit group. The director made no effort to relieve the job. because he felt it would press itself out. The employees who were dissatisfied would discontinue or they would be content to set up with the new ordinances. As it turned out. there were many employee surrenders. The director had no job in make fulling the vacancies with new workers. but the loss of experient forces was dearly-won to the concern. It didn’t take long for the new employees to go influenced by the more experient employees and the unsold/damaged nutrient per centum remained high. Then the director took a bolder measure. He eliminated all the benefits that the employees had – no free pizzas. salads. or drinks. The director triedstill another attack to relieve the lifting unsold/damaged nutrient per centum job and keep his fillip. He placed a notice on the bulletin board. saying that: if the per centum remained at a high degree. a lie sensor trial would be given to all employees. All those found guilty of taking or deliberately blowing nutrient or drinks would be instantly terminated. This did non hold the coveted consequence on the employees. because they knew if they were all subjected to the trial. all would be found guilty and the director would hold to disregard all of them. This would go forth him in a worse state of affairs than of all time. As the director sat in his office hearing to his beloved Cub’s baseball game. he analyzed the month’s profit/loss statements and knew things were non traveling to be good. What he did non anticipate was that the per centum was really increasing from old months. Another job developed at the Bloomington campus location when Jennifer. a late hired dark displacement counter clerk filed a ailment with the regional director. She stated in her ailment that she was ever required to work the late displacement and Bill the dark director was going a spot â€Å"too friendly† . In fact her ailment stated. the lone manner she could acquire off from work before than other employees was if she would hold to run into Bill on their darks off at Hoosier’s. a popular college pupil club down the street from Perfect Pizzeria. Additionally. there was a formal ailment from a group of male employees that merely the attractive female workers were being promoted to assistant directors or displacement leaders even though the work forces had worked at the eating house longer than most of the promoted adult females. Hopefully Caring Less About Shibboleths

Hopefully Caring Less About Shibboleths Hopefully Caring Less About Shibboleths Hopefully Caring Less About Shibboleths By Maeve Maddox In a recent email reader Phil Dragonetti raises the specter of could/couldnt care less. Why do some say I could care less;when they really mean I couldnt care less.? Weve already dealt with that shibboleth at DWT. I still have the bruises to show for voicing the opinion that as far as Im concerned, either is acceptable to convey the idea that one cares very little about a matter. The argument that the couldnt care less form is more logical moves me not at all. Since when is it a requirement of an English idiom that it be logical? Todays shibboleth is the word hopefully used with the meaning it is to be hoped that. Some examples: His parting remark was, â€Å"Hopefully, they will get it right next time.† Hopefully they’re working on a Mac port. Hopefully, they will end college the way they started it together. Hopefully weve won some fans over today, (This from a British source) Hopefully we are not headed for disaster in Cairo. This use of hopefully is disdained by many. For example this entry at Englishplus.com: Hopefully is an adverb which means what it ought to [italics mine]full of hope or characterized by hope. It normally modifies verbs. Nonstandard English sometimes substitutes the word hopefully for I hope (or some other subject with the verb hope). Correct: They listened hopefully for the sound of the rescue party. †¨(They listened with hope) Incorrect: Hopefully, they will come in time. Correct: I hope they will come in time. On the other hand, heres the note at Merriam-Webster: it is hoped : I hope : we hope usage In the 1960s the second sense of hopefully, which dates to the early 18th century and had been in fairly widespread use since at least the 1930s, underwent a surge in popularity. A surge of criticism followed in reaction, but the criticism took no account of the grammar of adverbs. Hopefully in its second sense is a member of a class of adverbs known as disjuncts. Disjuncts serve as a means by which the author or speaker can comment directly to the reader or hearer usually on the content of the sentence to which they are attached. Many other adverbs (as interestingly, frankly, clearly, luckily, unfortunately) are similarly used; most are so ordinary as to excite no comment or interest whatsoever. The second sense of hopefully is entirely standard. I often wonder what it is about some words or expressions that causes people to harbor such strong feelings against them. This comment by a guest of Charlie Rose is what prompted me to write about hopefully: [We should] tax all people 90% for misusing hopefully. Animosity towards hurtful ethnic or gender slurs are one thing. But hopefully? (Excuse me while I put on my catchers mask. I know Im about to be pelted.) Michael Quinion has an excellent discussion of hopefully at World Wide Words . You may also find the note at Answers.com of interest. Although I dont find hopefully particularly objectionable as a sentence adverb, I have to acknowledge that audience is everything. College students, for example, would do well to avoid the taboo usage in a written assignment. And I have to admit that I have friends and relatives around whom I would hesitate to use it. Sometimes knowing youre right doesnt matter. I recall a college English professor who told how he learned the importance of adapting to ones audience when he was home helping with the harvest and foolishly asked his fellow workers: To whom does this pitchfork belong? Health Report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Health Report - Essay Example I had an opportunity to interview one of the directors. He narrated their foremost great achievement of implementing the healthy, hunger-free kids Act. The Act remains imperative in improving and reauthorizing child nutrition programs. They were to get rid of unhealthy food and beverage in school, and other social amenities. This legislation provides more than 31 million American children who need greater access to healthy amenities. Despite some challenges, about 90% of schools have reported to meet the set food and beverages standards. NANA has improved nutrition and physical resources at CDC. Funding amplified between $2 in 1998 to $45 million in 2010. This has helped improve their services to the targeted population in the USA. NANA has made great achievements and improved the lives of many, thereby reducing deaths and health related diseases amongst children. I would recommend the government to be part of the greater contribution to create room for better services. The merging organization have helped in ensuring that the preferred healthy living is met in local areas and gives back report to NANA for better servicing. Science-based nutrition guidelines for school foods have also reinforced parents’ efforts to help their children eat healthy, making NANA’s work much easier at times. Story, M., Nanney, M. Public Safety and Privacy Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 1

Public Safety and Privacy Analysis - Essay Example Back in the 1970's the Supreme Court tackled in the case of Roe v. Wade the issues of pregnancy and even abortion as private matters (Chaiten, 2004). Today, however, the shift is on making the aspects of private realm as pertinent concerns of the state, especially when it comes to the issue of public safety. In the case of People v. Samson, the court ruled upon the rights of a parolee. The facts of the case focus on the encounter between the parolee and a police officer. It was September 6, 2002 police officer Alex Rohleder, while patrolling, saw and recognized the parolee Donald Curtis Samson whom he heard from his colleagues as having 'a parolee at large warrant.' Rohleder approached and inquired. Samson declared that he was then 'in good standing with his parole agent.' All the same, police officer Rohleder decided to conduct a search and justified the said search by claiming that as a parolee, there is a need to make sure that Samson obeys the laws and rules. It is a mere privilege that Samson has been set out of prison and he will be discharged Samson if he has 'nothing illegal.' There is actually a condition on Samson's parole that grants any officer the right to search at any time whether or not there is a warrant. This is a valid condition and it is implemented to all parolees i n the State of California. The police officer found cigarette box and discovered a plastic bag with methamphetamine. Samson was arrested. Samson filed a motion to suppress evidence, but this was denied. He was convicted and sentenced to imprisonment. He appealed before the Court of Appeals which affirmed the validity of the parole search. Analysis There are some situations and events that people undergo at present that are claimed to justify the interference of the state into what used to be purely private matters. This can be attributed to the onset of globalization and the too many changes it has brought to the society. It is a fact that most of the crimes committed today are those that goes beyond what the public can right away see. Some people are molested, harmed and harassed, even if there is no physical contact because of the internet and computer technology. Also, the terrorism that the whole world was able to witness in September 11, 2001 has left many people constantly paranoid of their safety in the public and in their homes. Evidently, these events called for the sudden reshaping of state laws and policies. These also prompted the need to shift paradigms and for the state to pry into the private realm to reveal any bad intent that may cause damage to the public. To many people, the question still remains. Who shall delineate the line on what remains private and what is public when the need arises Who shall say that the government can intervene in most private decisions an individual or household shall make (Chaiten, 2004) How shall every private individual be assured that the rule of law will constantly be implemented and that the inquiry into the public realm is justified This cannot go unresolved as people have witnessed how tendency to abuses and prejudices can harm a small number of people out there. The State is inviolable. Its general principles lie in serving the people that constitute it. Yet, it remains as a mere legal concept. Its

Consideration when building market-competitve compensation system Essay Example for Free

Consideration when building market-competitve compensation system Essay Discuss and explain the considerations when building market-competitive compensation systems. A company that strives to be competitive in whatever market they belong to will always look for strategic and competitive advantages. Building a market-competitive compensation system is the first step needed to attract, retain, and promote high performing individuals who will help a company reach and maintain that edge over competitors, so it is imperative to get it right the first time: offer compensation that is far above the median wage and the company must lower its bottom line, leaving it less money to reinvest, pay stockholders, etc. Offer too low a compensation package and the company will not be able to attract the high performers it is looking for to drive the competitive advantages further. To build a market-competitive pay system a company must: Conduct Strategic Analyses When a company conducts a strategic analysis of both the external market (industry profile, competitor information, long-term growth prospects) and internal factors (functional capabilities, financial situation) it is looking for the parameters or the limits that it can perform and grow with (Martocchio 146) . Assess competitor’s pay practices with compensation surveys The textbook goes into depth the factors surrounding compensation surveys, much of which are better explained in a statistics class. It is understandably difficult for a company to develop an internal custom compensation survey, as training personnel who have never done this is difficult, not the mention a company’s competition is understandably resistant to releasing pay numbers to rivals! Published surveys do exist, however, and consulting firms are there, depending on the industry. The most important strategic considerations to develop in a survey are determining the releva nt job market and choosing benchmark jobs within that market (150). Integrate internal job structure with external market pay rates – Using regression analysis, which â€Å"describes the linear relationship between two variables (i.e. simple regression) or between the linear composite of multiple variables and one other variable (i.e. multiple regression)† (380). In simpler terms, it is finding the sweet spot for the company pay based on external markets and what they pay and factors internal  to the company (relevant work experience, job value, etc). Determine compensation policies – A Company has three pay level policies to choose from: market lead, market lag, or market match. A market lead policy â€Å"leads† the way, establishing a pay which is higher than market trends but may result in reduced profits. This is, however, what a company may want to do to differentiate itself from the competition. Market lag policy has a company compensating employees less than the average. This is best suited to a lowest-cost strate gy and the claim can be made that those low costs are passed to the clients or consumers. Market match policy ensures the company is compensating its personnel the same as current market trends. It is a safe way to go but does little to help a company distinguish itself from competitors, but if it fits within the strategic goals of a company it is the way to go. Images of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals :: Essays Papers

Images of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals It all makes good sense so long as animals exist. Humans are not so different from nonhuman animals, yet through a vast array of often mutually supporting structures of domination – from food to fashion and psychology to war, â€Å"the suffering that we inflict on nonhuman beings can be extreme, and the numbers involved are gigantic†[1]. From this, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) branches out. A next step, a necessary path, a biological outgrowth or a wandering extension of a moral â€Å"circle† of consideration of nonhuman animals. The slogan: â€Å"Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on or use for entertainment†[2]. But more than a slogan to march to, the pithy philosophy also guides, unifies, and activates the media presence that makes up the fundamental faces of PETA. PETA is also other than a cadre for animal revolution, â€Å"we are complete press sluts†[3]. For animals, the revolution will be televised vigo rously. Whereas this struggle might be understood as the instrumental use of media to effect an outside end for real world concerns (more TV makes less animals die), how PETA’s images have worked can be understood on an alternate screen of anti-aliased renders and widescreen projection. A programming of simulation, nature, and animal. PETA’s internet enabled zoo of images, photos for every block of words and text for every block of pixels, both addresses and symbiotically supports the habitat and survival of the animals they hope to strategically aid. For, while ‘the cause’ would be served as well by the sudden disappearance of animal cruelty, what is advocated is precisely inclusive and referential of itself. These animals, whose kind is to be saved, live inside of html formatted rectangles in Photoshop blended subtlety and complexity. It all makes sense so long as animals exist, and the premise is hard to deny. Animals have been, as PETA is no doubt aware, consistently and progressively devastated, impacted, displaced, conquered, enslaved, caught, captured, killed, boxed in and eliminated. The activist may tell you that this process is by no means inevitable or necessary and must be ended now. But the images sear a different mark: animals, as we once knew them, may have already passed through their disappearance, ascension, and resurrection. Bruce Friedrich, PETA’s director of vegan outreach, has said of meat eating, â€Å"feeding plants to animals then eating the animals is like filtering water through a sewer then drinking it†[4].

Documentary: Waiting for Superman Essay

The concept of education as a vital part of life and success is universal, regardless of how it is done. Unfortunately, regardless of its importance in society, the education system does not always accomplish its goals. The documentary, Waiting for Superman, was an excellent illustration of the large problems we face here in America. From our disappointing comparisons of education in the US compared to other countries, and the system of the government (impoverished neighborhoods, poor and failing education institutions) is a crisis that should be addressed and brought to public attention. Although there have been countless attempts to reform education, increase budgets, and implement new programs, the education system in the U.S. is not doing its job entirely and as effective as society needs it to be to foster the future generations. The film is alarming to the sad truth: there are teachers out there who don’t care about what they do. There are teachers who use the contract that they signed into to take advantage of their role, and not do what they signed up to do. This was alarming especially being aware of real life examples and videos that were caught on tape of how teachers use their classroom time. Even more alarming the results of school testing that illustrates a clear image- schools are not producing what they should, and education system in institutions are not working! It does not take a genius to realize that something has to change. â€Å"You can’t have a great school without great teachers† is a beautiful quote mentioned in the film. Although government officials have sought out to reform education by providing funds or special programs, the real problem is finding effective and passionate teachers who truly seek to make a difference in the world by giving the gift of knowledge. If the system can effectively evaluate its teachers worldwide, and rid of teachers who are not doing an adequate job or benefitting the students or institution, they should no be teaching. Time is precious, especially time in the classroom and hopes for a new age of education system is possible. If there are more great teachers in our school systems, the US may have a brighter future. If there are qualified and effective schools, the children of America would not have to fight for a spot to receive education we all deserve. It is a shame that the system has  come to do this, change must come.

`As I lay Dying` by Faulkner and `Long Day’s Journey into Night` by O’Neill Essay

Family, the most important social unit, influences the thoughts and behavior of its members. When the members of a family are able to bond with each other and share their inner most feelings, it has a positive impact on the character and attitudes of the family members. But if the family members are alienated and isolated from each other, then it results in loneliness and sorrow for the family. The novel â€Å"As I Lay Dying† by William Faulkner and the play â€Å"Long Day’s Journey into Night† by Eugene O’Neill depicts families that are dealing with alienation and loneliness. In the novel â€Å"As I Lay Dying†, the members in the Bundren family react in different ways to the death of Addie Bundren, the mother. The thoughts and the views of the Bundren family members point towards their isolation from each other. The play â€Å"Long Day’s Journey into Night† focuses on the Tyrone family and the isolation of the family members from each other. As I Lay Dying In the novel â€Å"As I Lay Dying†, the author brings forth the views of the Bundren family members regarding each other. The mother in the family, Addie Bundren is on the verge of her death. Although Addie Bundren is the mother of Cash, Darl, Jewel, Dewey Dell, and Vardaman, it is Jewel that she loves the most. Addie Bundren is leading her matrimonial life with Anse Bundren but she never truly loved him. Unsatisfied by her marriage, she gets involved into an extramarital affair with her preacher, Reverend Whitfield. Jewel was the child, born out of this illicit relation, and so Addie showered more love and affection on Jewel than the other children. As Cash was Addie’s first child, she loves him too whereas she shows no affection towards her other children. Addie’s unhappy marriage influences her behavior towards her children. Addie herself is aware of her isolation from her children and her husband. She struggles to cope with her isolation, and at times attempts to make others feel of her presence. Being a school teacher, Addie beats her students to make them realize about her influence in their lives. â€Å"I would think with each blow of the switch: Now you are aware of me! Now I am something in your secret and selfish life, who have marked your blood with my own for ever and ever. † (Faulkner 170). After Addie’s death, the alienation and loneliness of the Bundren family is more evident, as each member reacts to the death in a different way. The family members are more concerned about their individual problems and conflicts than the death of Addie. â€Å"In As I Lay Dying, the various members of the Bundren family, are driven by conflicting interests and oppressive secrets that inevitably set them apart from one another. † (Cavallaro 35). Instead of thinking about themselves as a part of the family, the Bundren members are in pursuit of their personal aims. Long Day’s Journey into Night The play â€Å"Long Day’s Journey into Night† depicts the Tyrone family and the conflicts occurring among its family members. The mother in the family, Mary is addicted to morphine and the father and the two sons in the family are alcoholics. When the play opens, Mary has returned from a sanatorium where she was treated for her addiction. The youngest son in the family, Edmund is suffering from tuberculosis. As the play progresses, the family comes to know about Edmund’s disease and the fact that Mary has not yet succeeded in giving up her addiction. This leads to conflicts between the family members and brings about alienation among the Tyrone family members. The behavior of Tyrone is also one of the reasons which alienate the family members from one another. Tyrone is a frugal person who is careful about the way he spends his money. In the play there are many instances which point towards his frugality. He always insists on switching off the lights in the night, â€Å"There is no reason to have the house ablaze with electricity at this time of night, burning up money! † (O’Neil 126). The other family members blame his frugality as the reason for Mary’s condition. Mary is unable to connect with her family members, owing to her guilt. Tyrone is having strained relations with his son. As all the family members are struggling with their addictions and problems, they are incapable to bond with each other. â€Å"In O’Neil, characters are locked into their histories, unwilling or unable to push their freedom and responsibility, with horrible consequences. † (Cotkin 23). The Tyrone family members fail to identify themselves with their family. Their individual conflicts and problems cause the isolation among the family members. Conclusion Both the families in the stories â€Å"As I Lay Dying† by William Faulkner and â€Å"Long Day’s Journey into Night† by Eugene O’Neill depict families which are struggling with alienation and isolation. The members of the Bundren family in the novel â€Å"As I Lay Dying† are so engaged in their personal problems that they fail to connect with each other. Similarly, the Tyrone family members in the play â€Å"Long Day’s Journey into Night† are in conflict with each other, owing to various reasons, leading to alienation and loneliness. Bullying ha been given the definition: repeated and systematic harassment and attacks on others. According to Olweus (1993), A student is being bullied or victimized when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other students (Olweus, 1993, p. 9). The process of bullying can be undertaken by a group or an individual. The forms of bullying have been identified to be quite many with the following being just a sample: physical violence and attacks verbal taunts, name-calling and put-downs threats and intimidation extortion or stealing of money and possessions exclusion from the peer group It has been that bullying can be based around ethnicity. From research statistics, it has been shown that bullying is quite prevalent in schools with the boys being, in most cases, the bullies aand the lower grade students and girls being the victims (ASAP, 1996). How Bullying takes place. It has been shown that a given state of dynamics must exist for the process of bullying to take place. This is outlined in the order that follows: A power differential exists between the bully and the victim; Bullies tend to confident, aggressive, and lack empathy for the victim; Bullies come from homes where there is poor supervision, and modeling of and tolerance for aggressive behavior; Victims tend to be quiet, passive children with few friends; Victims do not respond effectively to aggressive actions; Bullying is often done so that adults are not aware of it; Victims are ashamed, and often don't tell an adult (ASAP, par. 4). From the above it is shown that bullying to take place there has to be a power imbalance to make it possible for the process to take place Buy custom Bullying essay

Affiliate, Franchise, and al-Qaeda Affiliate, Franchise, and al-Qaeda Affiliate, Franchise, and al-Qaeda By Maeve Maddox The first time I heard the expression al-Qaeda franchise, I ran to the dictionary. Surely, I thought, that cant be a correct use of the word franchise. The word franchise can be used with more than one meaning, of course. When we say that American women obtained the franchise in 1920, we mean that they obtained the right to vote. To enfranchise a person can mean either to confer the right to vote on a person or, in the context of servitude, to give a person his freedom. Since 1959, the noun franchise has been used with the meaning authorization by a company to sell its products or services. In 1966 it acquired the sense of commercial licensing. We speak of sports franchises, hotel franchises, and restaurant franchises. In every type of franchise, a business relationship exists in which an authorizing entity confers rights to operate some kind of business according to specified rules in exchange for a licensing fee. The noun affiliate is used in a similar way. An affiliate company is one that is related to another in a subordinate way. Koch Nitrogen Company and its affiliates are collectively one of the worlds largest producers and marketers of nitrogen fertilizers. Online marketing makes use of affiliate sellers who may promote a companys product on their websites for a percentage of its selling price, or who may sell their own products on a site owned by a large company to which they pay a percentage of their earnings. With both franchises and affiliates theres a mutually recognized and acknowledged business relationship, and money changes hands. It seems to me that the journalistic trend of referring to just any nest of terrorists as al-Qaeda affiliates or franchises is counterproductive. I understand the rationale for wanting a term that enables one to talk about copycat bombers without conveying the idea that al-Qaeda is more widespread and powerful than in fact it is. According to BBC writer John Simpson, BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner popularised the notion that, far from being a clear-cut organisation with executives and an international membership, al-Qaeda was like a franchise. Any effort to strip al-Qaeda of its bogeyman mystique is a step in the right direction, but using words that make us think of MacDonalds or Amazon.com may not be the best way to go about it. Unless a group like the one in Yemen that tried to send bombs to Chicago really is organized, funded, or sponsored by al-Qaeda, why not just call it an extremist group? The fuel produced by the country is a contributing factor to the economic growth of a country. The damage of such a resource has its implications of various sectors. Although, there is sometime required to estimate the damage caused by this hurricane, predications are made about the potential loss that the economy will incur. Hurricane Katrina has resulted in the increase in prices of gasoline and other oil products. The damage of oil production and refining facilities has resulted in high demand of gasoline. The prices of fuel have increased by about by 15 times. [Hurricane Katrina's impact on US economy should not be overestimated, 2005]. Gulf of Mexico comprises of about 30 percent oil production, 20 percent of the gas production and 60 percent of the oil imports in the U.S. [Samuelson, 2005]. This increase in the oil and gasoline price has affected the import and export of goods. Oil and gasoline is essential for transportation of products into and outside the country. The devastation caused to the oil and refinery productions in these areas have affected the transportation of the grains and goods outside the country and inflow of coffee and cargo into the country. However, there is a consolation that most of the import and export of goods occur after the fall so it has not causes a major damage to the foreign trade. [Samuelson, 2005] The increase in the price of the fuel has resulted in increase in price of every petrol-chemical and other related product. The hurricane has also affected the *retail market. There is increase in price on most of the products as a result the consumer budget is being affected. Most of the people spend large amount of money on the fuel due to the increase in prices of the fuel, while there is no increase in their salary or wages. As a result, they are unable to purchase high priced products. This will tend to affect the retail sales. *Consumer spending accounts to about two-thirds of the economy due to which a recession is forecasted in the economy. [Little, 2005]. The real estate business will make huge profits due to the hurricane. The hike in prices of the fuel and the shortage of building material in the country will result in increase in the value of the land and
